This survey is related to the growing segment of devices used by consumers at home. KLINE group, an international market research company which has monitored this market for the past few years has analyzed the following:

·         HUDs scope: cleansing, acne, body, anti-aging, hair loss, hair removal and vaginal rejuvenation. Interesting to note that Philips has launched in 2015 a blue light LED indicated for mild to moderate psoriasis

·         HUDs market: is estimated at $2.3 billion at retail value. In comparison to the cosmetic market estimated at more at $400 billion, the recent HUDs market is still very small. With the presence of major cosmetic players in HUDs such as UNILEVER, P&G, Philips, L’Oréal, J&J and Clinique this market is poised to dramatically increase in the next few years

·         Share of worldwide HUDs sales per region: USA in the first representing 37%, followed by Asia with 36%, Europe with 19% and the Rest of the world accounting for only 8%

Currently available technologies include: Electro-medical devices (laser), Intense Pulsed Light (IPL), Light Emitting Diode (LED), Radio Frequency (RF), Ultrasound (HIFU), Galvanic, Microdermabrasion and Ultrasonic Brushes.

Thanks largely to “Home Use Device Working Group” efforts worldwide, a first international safety standard for home-use laser and intense light source (entitled IEC 60335-2-113 Particular requirements for cosmetic and beauty care appliances incorporating lasers and intense light sources) was published in March 2016.

This survey is issued by the “Home Use Device Working Group” in preparation for the next 5-Continent-Congress (5-CC) in Barcelona (Aug 30th to Sept 2nd, 2018). The data from this survey will be presented during the 5-CC Home Use session on Aug 31st. An abstract will be submitted under a poster format to the winter AAD in Washington, D.C. in Mach 2019.
